Mahogany or Sapeli?

Both foils are often called “mahogany” in the trade and look very much alike – you can recognise Sapeli by the wider light stripes in the decor. If you are unsure, order a sample of each for €0.99 first and compare them directly on the window.

Paint or wrap?

Mahogany window frames: why foil instead of paint?

Painting uPVC means sanding, priming, several coats and drying time – and a wood grain is almost impossible to imitate with a brush. Mahogany foil comes with a ready-made factory finish and an even decor.

On older windows the mahogany shade may have darkened or faded. So compare the sample on a sheltered spot and on a weathered one.

Whole frame or a section

If the colours differ, it is better to re-wrap a whole profile side or the entire sash rather than just a small patch – the result looks more uniform.

Touching up small chips

For small scratches and chips a uPVC touch-up pen in the matching shade is often enough.

How it works

Wrapping mahogany window frames in 4 steps

Clean

Make the frame free of dust, grease and silicone, ideally with the RENOLIT window frame cleaner.

Cut to size

Cut the foil at least 2 cm larger for each profile side and lay the grain along the length of the profile.

Press on

Peel off the backing paper bit by bit and press the foil on with the felt squeegee, free of bubbles.

Trim the edges

Warm the edges slightly, fold them over and trim flush.

Questions and answers

FAQ about mahogany foil

Is mahogany foil suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. RENOLIT EXOFOL is a UV-resistant, weatherproof exterior foil for window profiles. More about self-adhesive exterior foil.

Mahogany or Sapeli – what is the difference?

Both are reddish-brown wood decors and are often sold as mahogany. Sapeli has wider light stripes in the grain, while mahogany looks finer. If in doubt, order a sample of each and compare them on the frame.

Will the foil match my old mahogany windows?

That depends on the manufacturer and the age of the windows – and on whether your windows are actually Sapeli. Compare samples of both decors on the frame beforehand.

Can I wrap white windows in mahogany?

Yes. The foil is applied directly to the cleaned white frame, and the window stays in place.

Wrap or paint – which is better?

For uPVC windows foil is usually the better choice: it gives an even wood grain, is finished the same day and needs no primer build-up.

How much does mahogany foil cost?

The price depends on the width and is shown on the product page; the sample costs €0.99. You'll find a worked example per window under cost of wrapping window frames.
