Remove adhesive residue from window frames: protective film, insect screens and tape
Adhesive residue on window frames usually comes from the protective film on new uPVC windows, and often also from the tape of an insect screen, hook-and-loop tape or sticky tape. If the protective film stays on the frame too long, or is peeled off in strong sun or frost, its adhesive stays behind. Here is how to remove adhesive residue from window frames and baked-on protective film without scratching the frame, and how to strip old foil before re-wrapping.

In short
- Prevention: peel off the protective film as soon as possible after installation.
- Warm and soak: warm hard residue with a hair dryer on the lowest setting, then soak it with warm washing-up water.
- Stubborn residue: dissolve it with the RENOLIT window frame cleaner, testing on an inconspicuous spot first.
- Household remedies: washing-up liquid and heat help. Use cooking oil or isopropyl alcohol only after a test on an inconspicuous spot, and do not leave them on for long.
- Never use: knives, utility knives, glass scrapers with metal blades, acetone, cellulose thinners or white spirit.
Why protective film leaves adhesive residue behind
The protective film is only meant to protect the frame during transport and installation. If it stays in the sun for weeks, its adhesive hardens and bonds firmly to the surface. This is known as baked-on protective film: it tears into small pieces when you peel it off, and the adhesive stays on the frame.
Peeling the protective film off in blazing sun or in frost also often leaves adhesive residue on the window frame. It is best to remove it in mild temperatures and as soon as possible after installation.
Do not use
Knives, utility knives or glass scrapers with metal blades, and solvents such as acetone, cellulose thinners or white spirit. They leave permanent scratches or dull patches, and on foiled frames these can no longer be polished out. Cream cleaners and magic erasers also abrade the surface.
Remove stubborn adhesive residue from uPVC window frames in 4 steps
Patience, not pressure: let heat, water and cleaner do the work instead of scraping.
Warm
Warm cold, hard adhesive residue with a hair dryer on the lowest setting. This softens the adhesive again.
Soak
Soak light residue with warm washing-up water and wipe it off with a soft cloth.
Use cleaner
Dissolve stubborn residue with the RENOLIT window frame cleaner. Test on an inconspicuous spot first.
Wipe down
Wipe down with clean water and rub dry with a microfibre cloth.
Remove baked-on protective film
If the protective film no longer comes off in one piece, work in sections:
- Warm a short section with a hair dryer on the lowest setting.
- Peel the film off slowly and flat, not with a sharp upward pull.
- Soak the remaining adhesive as described above and dissolve it with the cleaner.

RENOLIT window frame cleaner
Developed by the foil manufacturer: grease-dissolving, antistatic and does not attack the surface. For adhesive residue, rubber marks, crayon and building dirt on white and foiled frames. 1 litre for €24.99.
Remove adhesive residue from insect screens, tape and hook-and-loop tape
DIY insect screens are held on the frame with hook-and-loop tape or double-sided tape. After a few summers in the sun, the adhesive is often hard and yellow. The same goes for sticky tape or masking tape that has been left on too long.
- Peel the tape off slowly and flat; warm cold spots first with a hair dryer on the lowest setting.
- Push off thick beads of adhesive with a plastic scraper or an old plastic card, never with a metal blade.
- Soak the thin remaining film with warm washing-up water, then dissolve it with the RENOLIT window frame cleaner.
- Soak yellow, dried-on residue several times instead of rubbing.
Prevention
Only stick tape onto clean, dry frames and take the insect screen down in autumn. The less time the adhesive spends in the sun, the easier it comes off later.
Household remedies for adhesive residue: what helps and what damages the foil
Many tips from the internet work on glass but damage uPVC and foil. The protective layer of foiled frames is thin: anything that is left on for long or is abrasive can damage it permanently.
| Product | White uPVC | Foiled frame | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm washing-up water | suitable | suitable | softens adhesive, first step |
| Hair dryer, lowest setting | suitable | suitable | softens hard adhesive, keep your distance |
| Plastic scraper, plastic card | suitable | suitable | hold it flat, only for thick residue |
| RENOLIT window frame cleaner | suitable | suitable | does not attack the surface, for the remaining film |
| Cooking oil | test first | test first | leave on briefly, then degrease with washing-up liquid |
| Isopropyl alcohol | test first | test first | do not leave on, wipe off immediately |
| Baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, toothpaste, cream cleaner | do not use | do not use | abrade the surface and make it dull |
| Acetone, cellulose thinners, white spirit, nail polish remover | do not use | do not use | attack uPVC and foil |
| WD-40 | not recommended | do not use | oily film attracts new dirt |
Always test cooking oil and isopropyl alcohol on an inconspicuous spot first and only leave them on briefly. If they are left on longer, they can destroy the protective layer of the foil. A cleaner from the foil manufacturer that does not attack the surface is safer. For routine cleaning, read how to clean uPVC window frames.
Remove old foil from window frames
If you want to re-wrap foiled window frames, you must first remove damaged old foil completely. If the old foil is still intact, it is enough to sand its texture smooth.
- Mask undamaged profile surfaces with a piece of foil to protect them.
- Scrape off the old foil with the paint scraper 50 mm, warming it with a hair dryer first if necessary.
- Smooth the transitions with sandpaper, grit 120, then 220, then 400.
- Thoroughly remove dust and adhesive residue, then degrease with the cleaner.
Then re-wrap
On a smooth, clean surface the new foil will hold for good. Our guide shows you how to wrap window frames next.

Frequently asked questions about adhesive residue on window frames
How do I get protective film adhesive residue off the window frame?
Warm hard residue with a hair dryer on the lowest setting, soak it with warm washing-up water and wipe it off with a soft cloth. Dissolve stubborn residue with the RENOLIT window frame cleaner.
What can I do about baked-on protective film?
Warm the film section by section and peel it off slowly and flat. Soak the remaining adhesive and remove it with a cleaner that does not attack the surface.
Can I use acetone or cellulose thinners?
No. Solvents attack uPVC and foil and leave dull patches. Metal blades, cream cleaners and magic erasers are also off-limits.
When should I peel off the protective film?
As soon as possible after installation and in mild temperatures, not in blazing sun and not in frost.
How do I remove old foil from the window frame?
Scrape it off with the paint scraper, warming it first if necessary, smooth the transitions with sandpaper in grits 120, 220 and 400 and clean the surface thoroughly.
Does WD-40 help against adhesive residue?
We advise against it. WD-40 leaves an oily film on which new dirt collects. It should not be used on foiled frames at all.
How do I remove adhesive residue left by an insect screen on the window frame?
Peel the tape off slowly and flat, warming hard spots first with a hair dryer. Push off thick residue with a plastic scraper, soak the remaining film with washing-up water and dissolve it with a cleaner that does not attack the surface.
Which household remedies help against adhesive residue on window frames?
Warm washing-up water and heat from a hair dryer. Use cooking oil or isopropyl alcohol only after a test on an inconspicuous spot and only leave them on briefly, otherwise they can destroy the protective layer of the foil. Baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and cream cleaners abrade the surface.
How do I get yellow, dried-on adhesive residue off the window frame?
Warm and soak it several times instead of rubbing, then dissolve it with the RENOLIT window frame cleaner. If the surface underneath is discoloured, only a new foil surface will help.
Frame cleaned, but the surface is damaged?
Then give it a new surface with self-adhesive foil, in over 250 decors from RENOLIT and Continental. For an overview, see foil for window frames.
